'SEA WAVE' CA MACKEREL
Sea Wave packs two type of mackerel. The Pacific Mackerel (Scomber japonicus) is more abundant and more commonly available and the Spanish Mackerel (Trachurus symmetricus) will occasionally be packed as well.
Both varieties of mackerel are found in large schools and are purse seined off the California Coast throughout most of the year. Various types of mackerel are also abundant in other parts of the world.
Sea Wave freezes mackerel whole round, mainly in IQF form. Block packs and canned product are also available at times.
Mackerel is fished on a quota system. Product size varies from about eight count per pound to as much as over 2 pounds per fish.
Sea Wave packs whole round mackerel in a 50 lb bulk IQF carton and printed poly bags.
Mackerel can be used for bait or human consumption. Mackerel production in other parts of the world is often used for canning or freezing.
Although Sea Wave canned
mackerel has been popular in the past, very seldom is there enough
supply available to can and almost all Monterey production is frozen.
