The Latin name for the California Sardine is Sardinops sagax.

The primary catch season for California sardines is during summer months and early fall.  Weather and El Nino conditions sometimes greatly alter catch timing.

Sardines are pelagic and are normally caught near shore.  They range from Alaska to Mexico and are found in large schools.

Sea Wave primarily lands sardines in the Monterey Bay area.  Other packers will process product from other parts of the west coast.  Sardines are also abundant in other parts of the world.

Sea Wave freezes sardines whole round in block form and IQF.

Most often the sardines will run from about 20 grams to 100 plus grams per fish.  Fish smaller than this are not normally taken unless the larger fish are not available.  Fish of more than 35 count per pound are not normally landed.

Sea Wave packs whole round sardines in a 10 kg white printed carton with a poly liner.  They also pack a 50 lb bulk IQF carton and 1 lb printed poly bags.

The 10 kg pack is most often used for bait.  The fish are often used as bait on hooks for Yellowfin tuna and sometimes as chum.  The 50 lb IQF and 1 lb retail bags can be used for bait or human consumption.  Sardine production in other parts of the world is often used for canning.

Sea Wave cans sardines in water or tomato sauce in both an oval pack and regular tin.
