The vast majority of imported Vega Philippine Black Tiger Shrimp is packed raw headless (shell-on) and is block frozen in 4 lb net weight blocks with a heavy ice glaze for protection. The packer also occasionally offers block frozen P&D shrimp. Both are packed in a 6/4 lb master carton. Special orders can be placed for head-on shrimp packs as well.
Typical headless sizes run from 6-8 count per pound to 71-90 count per pound. Individual ponds may produce size mixes towards the large end of the range, the middle of the range or the small end of the size range.
The Philippines can raise tigers year round. Most ponds will produce only two crops per year. Ponds are subject to typhoon damage in the summer and some growers do not plant during this time. Some ponds are scheduled to try to take advantage of year-end demand and are harvested in October-November.
Ponds are usually near the ocean and shrimp is raised in brackish waters (part salt water, part fresh). Intensive farming procedures raise the shrimp on manufactured feeds and the entire pond is harvested at one time. Extensive ponds will use a combination of natural and manufactured feeds and ponds are normally harvested without draining.
Vega brand uses no chemicals in processing. Weights are true and accurate and counts are within the specified range. Vega is one of the best pond raised black tiger shrimp available on the market today.
HJR is one of
the largest shrimp and octopus packers in the Philippines. Their
products are marketed under the Vega, HJR and Ricky brand names.
Their quality consistency is outstanding.
